Accident and Trauma Services

The DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE is located in the west wing of JSS Hospital. The main door to emergency services is at the ground floor and is open 24/7. The department provides full time services to more than 30,000 patients a year and the number of ED visits have been increasing since the inception of the department.

Our department combines a high volume hospital experience, a carefully structured curriculum and an experienced team of dedicated clinical faculty. JSS hospital is home to one of the top most emergency medicine courses in Karnataka. The faculty, senior, and junior residents are well trained in advanced ED management, basic and advanced cardiac, and trauma life support skills. We receive diverse patient populations like poly trauma, acute coronary syndromes, stroke, sepsis, pneumonia, dengue and so on.

We have two recognised teaching programmes in the department, MD- Emergency Medicine and BSc- Emergency Medicine Technician. We supplement clinical experience with small group teaching, patient bedside teaching, regular academic meets and intensive educational courses. We benefit from strong academic collaboration with premier institutions around the country like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

We have a dedicated triage area where every patient is allocated priority according to the nature of the emergency. The Red zone is the main resuscitation area which is fully equipped with adult and paediatric crash carts, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and mechanical ventilators. There is provision for point-of-care-testing like ultrasonography, arterial gases, cardiac biomarkers, capillary blood glucose, etc. The department is also equipped with advanced instruments for difficult airway management like video-laryngoscope and fiberoptic laryngoscope.

Additional beds in the emergency ward and a well-equipped, extensive set of intensive care units in the hospital provide continued care for the patients requiring admission.
A team of senior Casualty Medical Officers who are an integral part of the emergency medicine department deal with medico legal issues and provide full time services in coordination with the emergency department faculty and residents.

We aim to provide a team of specialists who are competent and confident in treating the entire spectrum of emergency conditions. Our mission remains: To save lives through timely patient-centered emergency care driven by educational innovation and practice-changing research.
