PROCEDURES DONE IN THE DEPARTMENT
In this procedure, a flexible endoscope is used to evaluate disorders of Oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and Duodenum. It is commonly performed to evaluate upper abdominal pain, anaemia, vomiting blood, passing black coloured stool (Melena), diagnosing cancers of oesophagus, stomach and Duodenum. It is also used in therapeutic purposes as in control of upper Gastrointestinal bleed either by injecting, clipping or banding of the bleeding point, removing foreign body struck in food pipe and stomach.
Here a flexible endoscope is passed into the large intestine (colon) and distal small intestine (Terminal Ileum) through Anus. It is performed to diagnose the cause of bleeding in the stool, altered bowel habits, chronic loose stools, lower abdominal pain and to diagnose colon cancer. The test is also used therapeutically to control lower GI bleed wherein it is lifesaving!
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP):
This procedure is used to diagnose and treat obstructive Jaundice. It is used in the removal of common bile duct stones. Jaundice due to cancer involving the bile duct is relieved by deploying stents during ERCP. ERCP is also used in treating pain of chronic Pancreatitis by removing stones or inserting stents into the pancreatic ducts.
Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG):
PEG is the procedure that allows feeding directly to the stomach when the feeding through oral route is difficult. This procedure allows nutrition, fluids, and medications to be put into the stomach directly, bypassing the mouth and oesophagus. Prior to the procedure, the patient receives a sedative or local anaesthesia, and an antibiotic. During the procedure, the endoscopist places a flexible tube into the stomach through a small incision in the abdominal wall.
Sigmoidoscopy is the procedure indicated to view the sigmoid colon. This allows the doctor to examine the sigmoid colon using a flexible tube with a light on it. It helps in detecting the presence of ulcers, polyps, abnormal cells, and cancer cells. Sometimes, your doctor may remove a piece of sigmoid colon tissue to examine under the microscope.
During the procedure, the doctor inserts the Sigmoidoscope (a flexible tube with a light and camera at the tip) into the anus. The colon is inflated to obtain a clear vision. The procedure may take about 10 to 20 minutes.
In this test, the organs are scanned from inside the food pipe, stomach or small intestine helping in very accurate assessment of the pathological lesion. Biopsy may also be obtained at the same time.
