The department of psychiatry JSS hospital was established in 1987. It has been dealing with the mental health and neuroscience, providing service to children, adolescents, adults and geriatric population. It has given opportunities for psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, speech and hearing therapists and clinical pharmacists. The department is devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study and treatment of mental disorders.
Compassionate care and just not cure is the motto of PSYCHIATRY Department, JSS Hospital.
The department of Psychiatry comprises of 2 units. The department has evolved over a period of years and is known for being compassionate to patients and their attenders, paying attention to holistic development of patient’s personal social and occupational life, updating and using the latest developments in the field, so much so that difficult cases from other places in and around Mysore district are referred to the department. Apart from diagnosing and treating serious and complicated illnesses, it is also working towards increasing the number of preventive and rehabilitative services offered.

SEXUAL MEDICINE UNIT has been established which has been a novel concept and one of its kind in a Medical College, since 1997.
We have actively conducted numerous State-Zonal-National & International Conference on Psychiatry, ANCIPS, SAARC PSYCHIATRIC FEDERATION Conference29th, 30th Nov. & 1st Dec. 2013,SASSM annual conference November 2016.
We have 24 hour laboratory services, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, speech and hearing therapists and clinical pharmacists. There is 24 hours access to internet with 2 desktops and 1 laptop in the department.
30 bedded secured wards for females and males are available for psychiatric patien.
OPD runs between 9 AM and 4 PM
4 students are enrolled for Postgraduate programme every year. There are 3 master degree (MD) seats and 1 diploma in psychiatry (DPM ) seat in Psychiatry department. The undergraduate students are posted for a period of 15days in Psychiatry during their course of study. This includes posting in IV semester.
Clinical examinations are conducted at the end of each posting for internal assessment. Theory classes are conducted during III and IX semesters. Seminars are presented by the students under faculty guidance in the IV semester. Theory examinations are conducted at the end of IX semesters for internal assessment. In addition to the teaching curriculum, students are actively encouraged to present projects for the ICMR Short Term Research Studentship.
The postgraduate teaching programme (MD and DPM) consists of case discussions, seminars, journal clubs meetings in addition to bed side teaching. Guest Lectures for Post graduates and Protocol discussions are carried out periodically. Family therapy clinic, de-addiction clinic, memory clinic, sexual medicine clinic, geriatric clinic, neuropsychology clinic, child guidance clinic are held regularly.
Postgraduates are actively involved in community psychiatry through health camps. They are encouraged to attend conferences and present and publish papers. They are continuously assessed by presentations in the seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, punctuality, sincerity and commitment in caring for patients and also by conducting internal assessment both clinical and theory periodically.
Interns are posted for a period of 15 days during which they become familiar with common procedures and emergency management. Seminars are presented by them under faculty guidance.

- JSS DIAL (Doctors interested in alternative learning) is a unique forum initiated by the department which has 500plus books whereby Non-medical books are exchanged between faculty from various departments.
- The department also has a dedicated center for recreation & book library Exclusive for caregivers & in-patients . One of its kind in India.
