ENT is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases extending from dura to the pleura. The ENT department of JSS Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive medical and surgical care to patients who come with ear, nose or throat problems, including advanced surgeries for Head and Neck cancers, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Anterior and Lateral Skull Base Surgeries as well as Cochlear Implantation for the Deaf.
The Department was established in 1984, and since then it has been working as a team towards treating the ailing and the sick. It is headed by Prof. Dr. Prakash B.G. who has over twenty eight years of experience. The other faculty members include Professor and Former HOD Dr Bhararthi M B, two Associate Professors, three Assistant Professors and two Senior Residents, all of whom are well versed with the subject and are skilled surgeons who have been trained at various National and International institutes.
The department runs OPDs every day and caters to the needs of people from not only Mysore, but also several nearby districts. The hospital provides good quality medical care at very affordable prices and is a boon for the thousands of poor people who come from far away areas where medical facilities are scarce. The ENT Department, living up to the motto of the hospital, has worked hard at providing the best treatment possible for all the ear, nose and throat problems. Be it the modern diagnostic aids or the latest surgical methods, we have always been up to date and this never ending quest for knowledge continues . Our department also participates actively in workshops, conferences and presentations.
We have organized various Regional and National level conferences which have showcased advanced surgeries and talks on all the recent advances in the field. These conferences have been well acclaimed by the experts in the specialty. Many of our faculty have also been invited for performing live surgical demonstrations as well as to deliver talks at National and International forums.
The department has guided several PG students for master’s degree and continues to impart knowledge to the younger generation of doctors.The department has its own seminar hall, a library as well as advanced teaching aids like LCD projectors and access to internet. We are also constantly involved in research activities. We have a state of the art Temporal Bone dissection lab, where we conduct regular Hands-on training workshops for the junior doctors to learn basic and advanced ear surgeries.
The interdepartmental collaboration with other departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Neurology, Radiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and Speech and Hearing Department, have been of great help in setting up various specialty clinics. The Department runs a number of speciality clinics like Dysphagia clinic, Head and Neck Cancer clinic, Cochlear Implantation clinic, Vertigo clinic, Allergy clinic, Headache and Voice clinic. The Dysphagia clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic involving ENT surgeons, physicians, swallowing therapists and dietitians who give comprehensive care to patients with swallowing disorders. Many geriatric and neurological patients have been drawing benefit from the clinic. The New born hearing screening program has been successfully implemented in association with the Department of Pediatrics and JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing. Children who have been suspected of having hearing loss are then subsequently followed up in the Cochlear Implant clinic for effective management. It has been playing a major role in the early detection of deafness in children and hence will go a long way in the eradication of deafness in our society. These clinics cater to the specific needs of these patients giving them all- inclusive care and treatment.
We have surgeons specialised in different aspects of ENT providing advanced care to the patients. We have been a leading centre for Head and Neck cancer surgeries since many years. Our experts have been involved in performing anterior and lateral skull base surgeries like CSF repair, Transphenoidal approach to the Pituitary gland, Surgery for glomus tumour etc, in coordination with the Department of Neurosurgery.
A major breakthrough for the Department has been the inclusion of Cochlear Implantation for the deaf along with rigourous Auditory Verbal Therapy, done in association with JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing. This surgery has opened new avenues of learning for several children who were otherwise oblivious to the world of sound.
Our department has been actively involved in many Community Outreach Program and has been conducting head and neck cancer detection camps, deafness detection camps as well as regular school health checkup programs. Several programs for public awareness about the hazards of smoking and alcohol have also been planned by the department. These programs will help in prevention as well as early detection of diseases thus reducing the burden on the health care system.
Department of ENT, since its inception in 1984, is successfully catering the people in and around mysuru providing quality medical and surgical care ranging from basic surgeries to advanced surgeries which are at par with international standards.
