Rare Surgery Performed at JSS Hospital , Mysore. Giant Chest and Spinal Schwannoma tumor operated by Neurosurgery department JSS Hospital, Mysore. A 70 year old farmer, resident of Village near Mysore , a known hypertensive and chronic smoker, previously operated 10 years back for gastric ulcer perforation, presented recently with chief complaints of total weakness of lower limbs, upper backache and difficulty in breathing over 2 months. He was thoroughly evaluated with necessary investigations. MRI imaging of chest with dorsal spine showed a huge mass about the size of a coconut inside the chest compressing the lungs, heart and aorta and was also extending into spinal canal compressing the spinal cord resulting in total weakness of both legs. He was evaluated at various established hospitals in Mysuru and was considered “inoperable” and was referred to JSS hospital, Mysore. He was operated at JSS Hospital Neurosurgery department by Dr (Col) T S Vasan(Prof & HOD) , Dr Raghavendra.M (Asst.Prof) and team by opening the chest and then opening the spinal canal to remove the tumor completely in one stage by using advanced micro-neurosurgical equipment along with Neuro monitoring ( this equipment is only available in JSS hospital in Mysuru). This was performed under government financial assistance scheme (with no cost to the patient). He was monitored in ICU for a day and was discharged home within a week in good status. This large giant Schwannoma is extremely rare tumor even in the world statistics.
