The Oral Hygiene Day was introduced to commemorate the birth anniversary of the doyen of Indian Periodontics as well as the founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP), Dr. G.B Shankwalkar. The main objective of celebrating this day is the spread the message of the significance of Oral health to avoid the various worrisome dental diseases that could affect the health of an individual due to its neglect. The Global burden of Disease study of 2017 conducted by World Health Organization gave a shocking statististics that around more than a billion people across the globe suffer from oral diseases most of which were a result of neglect of basic oral hygiene practices like regular tooth brushing. The day aims at spreading awareness about the significance of maintaining oral hygiene and also various systemic disease which because of neglect of oral health.
SIGNIFICANCE OF MAINTAINING ORAL HEALTH.
Human body is a complex machine where all the systems are interconnected to each other. Poor oral health can also result in various systemic complications like diabetes and heart diseases, complications in pregnancy and also health problems in geriatric patients due to nutritional deficiencies. Therefore regular measures should be taken to ensure oral health so avoid the risk of systemic diseases.
Some of the measures that could be taken to ensure good oral health are;
- Brushing.
- Flossing.
- Tongue Cleaning
- Using Mouthwash.
- Frequent Dental Check-ups.
- Consumption of Nutritious Diet.
- Quitting Unhealthy Habits (smoking, chewing tobacco).
Hence, it is important that every individual understands the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene as it influences the systemic health. Oral cavity is a mirror to the overall health of an individual, hence it’s important to maintain a good oral hygiene so as to ensure overall well-being of each individual. It’s a must for all the individuals suffering from any systemic disorders to get their oral health evaluated periodically so as to have a good systemic health.
