About The Department


Being a fundamental primary specialty, the Department of General Surgery was started in 1986-87 with the inception of JSS Medical College and Hospital to fulfill the visions of our founder, His Holiness Jagadguru Dr Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji. With the blessings and patronage of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, the department has progressed with an exponential growth of the hospital. The department of General Surgery was started with Dr. Jeevandra Kumar as the Head of the department and few young dynamic surgeons who had graduated from various prestigious institutions across the country.

From the inception of the department 9 senior eminent Professors have overseen the growth of the department with their rich experience and leadership. At present the department has more than 30 faculty members with a nice blend of experienced and youth, lead by an able surgeon, Dr B J Sharath Chandra.

The department of General Surgery performs more than 2000 open surgeries and more than 500 laparoscopic procedures each year. Many surgical procedures such as Shunt surgeries for portal HTN, Whipples procedure, oesophago gastrectomies, pan colectomy, minimal access surgery for all types of hernia, anti reflux surgeries and minimal access endocrine surgeries like thyroid, pheochromcytoma were performed for the 1st time in Mysore city by our faculty. The department has also conducted various community outreach programs like health camps, OPD services at Suttur and Chamrajnagar.

PG course started in the department in 1993, with an annual intake of 4 pgs which has now increased to 16 pgs every year. The faculty members have held various posts in national and state level surgical organisations like ASI, KSCASI. The department of General Surgery has more than 200 research publications in various national and international journals with more than 25 publications being added every year. The department of General Surgery has also conducted various workshops and CMEs on a regular basis. As a part of the pre conference workshop conducted during the national conference of ASI (ASICON 2016, Mysuru), the department was instrumental in organising the workshop along with three other renowned hospitals in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Coimbatore). The department also conducted first ever KSCASI MIDCON 2018, KSCASI 2003 and International college of Surgeons, Indian section conference in 1999.
