Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology plays a vital role in diagnosis and management of various Infectious diseases including outbreaks. Department of Microbiology, under the management of JSSAHER was established in the year 1984. Through 37 years, it has evolved a lot. Currently the department has 10 qualified MD Microbiology faculty and 2 tutors.
The Department is committed to give quality and timely services to the patients utilizing state of art facilities available. About 500 samples are received each day round the clock and reports are dispatched well within the turnaround time. The Department is equipped to cater its services not only to the parent institute but also to several other hospitals in and around Mysore. The distinctive motto of the department is to “SAVE ANTIBIOTICS, SAVE LIVES” wherein it takes a major step towards fighting anti-microbial resistance by arriving at the etiological diagnosis and reporting minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for antibiotics. Apart from these facilities pertaining to aim towards fighting anti-microbial resistance, the department also has other facilities like aerobic and anaerobic culture, fungal culture, diagnosis of autoimmune diseases by immunofluorescence test, HIV and hepatitis testing by ELISA and Chemiluminiscence assay. Various serological tests are available for diagnosis of common infectious diseases like malaria, typhoid, dengue, leptospirosis, rickettsial fever etc. The department is one among the designated Microscopy centres under NTEP for diagnosis of TB.
Microbiology department is the first laboratory to achieve NABL accreditation for HIV diagnosis as a State Reference Laboratory offering HIV viral load testing. The department has taken a step ahead in establishing COVID laboratory, which was very much essential during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was the first lab to get accreditation for NABL for Covid RT-PCR testing in Mysore. Till date more 60000 samples are tested in the laboratory. Other diagnostic facilities like Rapid antigen testing, Covid-19 IgG antibody testing using CLIA and ELISA, IL-6 testing were also introduced.
Aiming at diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, Molecular diagnostic laboratory was established in the year 2018 . It is well organized and equipped with latest PCR equipments. Uncultivable pathogens especially viruses are detected by multiplex PCR which helps in establishing prompt diagnosis and instituting appropriate treatment.
The department takes part in External quality Assurance programs with renowned institutes like Christian Medical College, Vellore and PGI, Chandigarh. Microbiology department has active participation in Hospital infection control and conforms to all NABH standards. The experienced and highly motivated teachers involve themselves in teaching and research activities apart from diagnostic services and have published more than 200 national and international research papers in highly reputed journals. Active participation of faculty in various committees like Hospital infection control, antibiotic stewardship, NABH, NABL etc ensures providing quality reports.
