Seeking the blessings of His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswami ji and offering our humble pranams to His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswami ji, JSS Hospital has achieved a historic milestone in healthcare. For the very first time in Mysuru, the Department of Orthopedics successfully performed a Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (RTSA) using state of the art Virtual Implant Positioning (VIP) technology by Arthrex.

This landmark surgery, executed by the Orthopedics Unit III team at JSS Hospital, highlights the institution’s commitment to advancing medical innovation and patient care. Under the visionary guidance and support of Vice Chancellor Dr. H. Basavanagowdappa, Principal Dr. Narayanappa, JSS Hospital Director Dr. C. P. Madhu, and Head of Department Dr. Siddalingamurthy, the procedure was completed successfully. It stands as a testament to the growing prominence of JSS Hospital as a center of excellence in orthopedics.
The team expressed deep gratitude to the anesthesiology department led by Dr. Girish, the OT nursing staff, technicians, and postgraduate students for their dedicated contribution. Special acknowledgment was given to team members Dr. Santhosh, Dr. Shreyas, and Dr. Shashikumar, whose collaborative efforts made the first of its kind surgery in Mysuru possible. They also extended their heartfelt thanks to the patient and attendants for their faith in JSS Hospital.
Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty is a sophisticated surgical solution designed for patients with severe shoulder dysfunction, particularly when conventional shoulder replacement proves ineffective. Individuals suffering from persistent pain, difficulty with daily activities such as combing hair or reaching the back, and pseudo-paralysis caused by rotator cuff insufficiency can benefit significantly from this approach. In this technique, the shoulder’s natural ball-and-socket orientation is reversed, where the glenoid socket becomes the humeral head and the humeral head assumes the role of the socket.

This modification empowers the deltoid muscle to compensate for damaged rotator cuff muscles, thereby restoring function and improving quality of life.
Initially reserved for irreparable cuff tear arthropathy, Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty has now expanded in scope. It is increasingly considered for patients with primary osteoarthritis, complex proximal humeral fractures (especially Neer’s four-part fractures), and tumors. The decision to perform RSA takes into account patient-specific factors such as age, bone quality, activity levels, and the degree of rotator cuff compromise.
This pioneering surgery is not only a feather in the cap of JSS Hospital and its Orthopaedics Department but also a beacon of hope for patients across the region. By bringing cutting-edge procedures like VIP-enabled RTSA to Mysuru, JSS Hospital reaffirms its role as a trailblazer in healthcare and a trusted institution for advanced medical care in Karnataka.
