What is Hair Transplantation?

It is a surgical procedure in which permanent hair from regions of the Scalp that normally never goes bald, such as the sides & lower back of the head is transferred or redistributed into areas of permanent hair loss or thinning. In addition to scalp hair restoration hair transplants can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair & hair lost due to trauma on the scalp or on the body as well.

Hair naturally grows in clusters of one, two, three & sometimes four. These clusters are called “follicular hair units”. Hair transplantation procedure imitates nature by relocating these naturally occurring “follicular hair units” from the donor area (i.e. the back and the sides of the head) to the recipient site (balding area).

Types of Hair Transplant Procedures

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In this, hair is harvested through small circular incisions over a considerable larger area of the donor zone leaving tiny, round & white scars.
  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT/Strip)
In this, a long thin tissue is removed from the donor area from the back & sides of the scalp & the individual follicular units are removed from that strip via stereo-microscopic dissection. The wound edges are then closed leaving a single & generally fine scar.
  • Direct hair transplantation (DHI)
DHI, or direct hair implantation, is an advanced, modified version of FUE hair transplant. It involves extracting the hair follicles and implanting them using a specialized CHOI implanter pen. It is a fairly safe procedure that provides superior results in terms of hair growth.

What Happens in a Hair Transplant Procedure.

  • Hair transplantation surgery is considered to be “Minor day care surgery”
  • Hair transplant procedures can take about 3-8 hours and are usually performed using local anaesthesia on day care basis. Patients are awake; hence they do not need to be hospitalized after the surgery. The donor areas where the grafts have been harvested are usually closed with sutures or surgical staples except in the Follicular Unit Extraction technique (FUE) which does not require surgical closure. These sutures are usually removed in 7-14 days.
  • Dissolvable sutures may occasionally be used in order to eliminate the need for you to return for suture removal. The recipient sites where the grafts are placed on top are essentially small, superficial needle holes or slits in the skin of the scalp. If the scalp cannot provide adequate donor follicles then the non-scalp areas like beard & torso can be used to restore bald areas.
  • Our surgeon will discuss with you the pros and cons of the various methods of both donor harvesting & transplanting the grafts.
  • At the end of the procedure either a very light dressing is applied or in many cases the doctor will have you stay for brief observation & then allow you to leave with a small or no dressing.
  • At the conclusion of the procedure the surgeon usually checks the final placement of the grafts and the doctor or an assistant then explains the post-operative instructions which are usually supported in written format as well.
