Depression is a mood disorder that affects a person’s daily life and activities. It is fairly common and seen in approximately 8-10% of the population. Depression is more than a constant state of sadness or feeling ‘blue’.
Symptoms
- Loss of interest- no longer finding pleasure in activities
- Feeling tired easily
- Multiple pains and aches
- Frequent headache
- Disturbance in sleep patterns
- Decreased appetite
Depression may interfere with the person’s daily activities as it may cause difficulty concentrating on or completing tasks. In severe cases, it may also cause a person to feel hopeless about one’s future, have negative thoughts about self and the world, which may progress to the person having thoughts of ending one’s life.
Causes
- Low level of serotonin neurotransmitter in the brain, which functions to regulate mood and energy levels in an individual
- Having other medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or any other chronic illness also increases a person’s risk of developing depression.
- Suffering from recent or chronic life stress
- Isolation and lack of support from friends and family can also cause depression
