Department of General Medicine is one of the core department from the inception of the hospital. Department was started in the year 1986, was headed by Dr. Balachandra Rao. Later from 1st May 1987 department was headed by renowned teachers and clinicians Dr Ramashetty, Dr T.B.Basavarajendra, Dr Muniratham Cheety, Dr C.K.Patil, Dr Basappa, Dr H.BasavanaGowdappa and Dr K.A.Sudarshana Murthy in the different tenures till 29th Feb 2016. Form 1st of March 2016 Dr Subhash Chandra B.J. is heading the department till date. Since the inception of the department we are in the fore front in the patient care in the hospital, on an average department is catering Ninety thousands to One lakh out patients and Nine to Ten thousands inpatients annually and support all other clinical departments for managing comorbidities of systemic diseases.
Department has taken initiative to establish Medicine subspecialty departments like Nephrology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology after strong foundation of its own. Off late departments like Rheumatology, Geriatrics and Medical Oncology has been added to its feathers.
In addition to Compassionate, Contemporary and evidence based care of the patients, department is also teaching UG MBBS, BDS, Physiotherapy students since the department was established. Off late Allied health sciences students of our University also thought by our department faculties. In the year 1993 Post Graduate teaching was started in the department. Since then twenty five batch of Post Graduates are trained. Our Alumini spread across the country and some are in abroad, some of them acquired subspecialty Qualifications, working as renowned Academician and successful practitioner in serving the mankind.
Department is also part of the out reach programmes of the Medical college and hospital, VIZ Suttur PHC and ChamarajaNagar JSS General Hospital. In addition to this department is actively involved in Community oriented programmes like Camps, Health education lectures, NSS, and invited as resource persons in electronic and print media (TV, All India Radio etc)
Our department faculties and PGs in addition patient care, they are front runners in the research publications. Department has 165 Publications in the last five years. Department also has many Funded projects and conducted many clinical trials in the last five years
In addition to above some our faculties awarded globally recognised fellowships like FRCP, MRCP, Fellow of the American College of Physicians ,Fellow of Indian College of Physicians, FAIMER and so on. Some our faculties were resource persons in National and State level Physicians, Diabetic and Metabolism conferences. Our faculties actively involved in the API and RSSDI(National, State and local branch) activities, academic programmes and served as office bearers.
Department has played pivotal role in manging Covid care in the Hospital. We have taken care major chunk of patients belongs to mild, moderate and less severe cases. Our Post graduates and faculties taking care of Covid patients since the inception as Covid designated hospital ( Out Patient care from 17th March 2020 and In-patient care from 2nd July 2020). Department has taken key role in effective management of human resources in Covid management in our hospital by timely supplementing guidelines and suggestions to administrators of the Hospital

Geriatrics Clinic
JSS Hospital, Medicine Department has taken initiative to start Geriatrics Clinic from 2014 considering the gravity of Geriatric population. At present 10 – 12% of Indian population is of Geriatric people. It is expected to increase to 30 – 40% by 2050. Keeping in mind our management has taken special interest in opening a Geriatric wing. Geriatric people are special population who needs comprehensive care.
In view of this Geriatric OPD will be run 3 days a week between 9.00 am – 4.00 pm (Monday, Wednesday & Friday). They will be assessing comprehensively with the team of specialist consisting of
- Physicians
- Orthopedition
- ENT Surgeon
- Ophthalmologist
- Nutritionist
- Physiotherapist
- Pharmacist.
This wing is headed by Dr.Prathiba Pareira, Professor of Medicine along with Dr.Shilpa Avarebeel, Assistant Professor, with the support of ancillary departments.
Shortly department will come up with day care center and home services for Geriatric population.
Note:
After 5.00 pm till the next day 9.00 am Geriatric patient will be attended by duty Physician during emergencies.
