Ophthalmology is a surgical speciality dealing with diseases related to eye and ocular adnexa. On a broad overview, the department is catering to all forms of ocular problems thus giving comprehensive eye care and sub speciality care.
At present it is under the able guidance of Dr Prabhakar S K, head and professor with a vast experience in ophthalmic medicine of more than 25 years. He is assisted by professors, two Associate, two Assistant professors and two senior residents. The department has been divided into two units which work on alternate days in outpatient department and operating theatres. The operating theatres are functioning on all 7 days of the week and we have round the clock ophthalmic emergency care facilities.
All kinds of ophthalmic speciality services like cataract, glaucoma, cornea, retina (Both medical and surgical), paediatric ophthalmology, orbit and oculoplasty are provided. The department is equipped with latest diagnostic equipment and is self-sufficient to deal with all kinds of ocular problems and ophthalmic emergencies. The surgical procedures and diagnostic procedures provided are modestly priced and has been beneficial for all cadres of socio economic status.
Apart from under graduate training of MBBS students, the department has post-graduation course from many years. They have a strict academic curriculum and have both clinical and surgical exposure. The department has extended its wings towards BSc optometry from 2015 and candidates experience both theoretical and practical optometry knowledge.
The department conducts several ocular disease screening camps at rural areas, educational institutes and corporate set ups. Free cataract surgeries are provided under the aid of District blindness control society in and around Mysuru.
