The Department of Radiodiagnosis had its humble beginnings with a single X-ray machine, in the year 1986. Over the past 35 years, the department has considerably evolved in terms of technology and services rendered there of. The department of Radiology and Imaging has state-of-the-art technology at its access to cater to a variety of clinical problems requiring imaging services. The faculty of the department are highly skilled, trained and academically oriented who endeavour to provide unparallel services to the public.

The department is equipped with latest Computed and Digital X-Ray units (CR and DR), Ultrasound machines with high-end scanners, Colour Doppler, Digital Fluoroscopy, Mammography, high-end DSA, 128 slice CT scan & 3 Tesla MRI machine. All modalities are connected to a high end Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and are available round the clock.

Vision :

To be recognized nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence.

Mission :

  • To provide optimal care in a patient-centred environment.
  • To provide top quality imaging and therapeutic procedures.
  • To provide subspecialty expertise.
  • To advance medical education and collaborative translational research.

Radiographic Services

Static radiograph units:

  • The department is equipped with 6 High resolution Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Radiography (CR) units with CR readers to ensure high diagnostic accuracy.
  • All forms of conventional X-Ray are taken; long length imaging is also performed with Digital stitching. This is useful for scoliosis as well as evaluation of angulation and limb length in patients with marked osteoarthritis of the knees.

Portable Bedside radiographs-

  • Radiographs are performed at the patient bedside, mainly in ICU’s and also in COVID isolation wards. 7 portable X-Ray units are available for bedside X-Ray. The use of good quality Computed Radiography (CR) results in pristine image quality as well as considerable reduction in radiation exposure.

Special radiography/fluoroscopic procedures –

  • Dedicated Digital Fluoroscopy unit is available for special investigations. Barium studies, Intravenous urography (IVU), Sinograms, Hysterosalpingogram, Sialogram, Breast Ductogram, Urethrogram (retrograde urethrography and voiding cystourethrography) are some of the procedures done in the department by skilled radiologists.

Mammography

  • Mammograms (Breast X-Ray) are done in a dedicated a mammography unit by trained female technicians with complete privacy.

  • Prostate MRI including diffusion MRI and dynamic contrast MRI.
  • Breast MRI with dynamic contrast MRI.

NEUROIMAGING SERVICES:

  • Specialised and dedicated diagnostic neuroimaging services are offered by trained specialists Dr. T R Kapila Moorthy, former Professor and Head of SCTIMST, Kerala and Dr. Roopa Seshadri, Interventional Neuroradiologist trained at NIMHANS, Bangalore.

INTERVENTIONAL PROCEDURES –

  • Neurological & endovascular interventions: This subspecialty is headed by Dr. Roopa Seshadri, a specialist in the field of neurovascular intervention, trained at NIMHANS. As part of the stroke team at JSSH, she performs mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke. Some of the other interventions done include intracranical angioplasty and stenting for intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, aneurysm coiling, dural AVF embolisation, venous stenting for IIH and retinal artery embolisation for retinoblastoma. All endovascular procedures are also done with few being peripheral artery angioplasty, pre-operative embolization of vascular tumors, uterine artery embolization, prostate embolization and stenting & embolisation of visceral arteries.
  • Other interventions (Under ultrasound / CT guidance) : Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and Percutaneous cholecystostomy are done under ultrasound and fluoroscopy guidance. Diagnostic and therapeutic aspirations, guided pigtail & intercostal drainage (ICD) insertions, guided FNAC & biopsies by the team of of non-vascular intervention radiologists.
